More than 20 years ago I had a goal of becoming a brewer and perhaps one day even owning my own brewery. I had a vision that passion, art, community connection and business would all come together in one ultimate pint. In 2010 that dream began to take shape, and in 2012 became a reality when we founded American River Brewing Company.
Of course, I love beer so picking my favorite ARBC brew is tough. I’ve been a beer-drinker since I was just a tyke (Danish roots, you know), so it’s hard to pick just one. I enjoy them all, depending on the day.
My favorite food to enjoy with one of our beers is a pan-fried New York steak, medium-rare, with steamed broccoli and mashed potatoes. That’s good old comfort food, especially when paired with Coloma Brown or Fire Break Red Ale.
My wife Claire and I have a dog and two cats that make up our family. Most nights you’ll find us curled up in from of the television watching NCIS or a good movie. We really enjoy classic movies like “Casablanca,” “True Grit” (the original one with The Duke), or “Christmas Story.”
I used to be an avid SCUBA diver, but these days finding time to get away is rare and vacations are somewhat few and far between. However, I do still try to fit in a quick round of golf every now and then when my schedule allows.
I’ve been blessed to have been a part of this industry since the early 90’s and I’ve worked for some of the best brewers and breweries in the nation. For me, the learning never stops when it comes to brewing and I uncover something new every day.
I first met David when we worked together several years ago and he told me this idea he had for starting his own brewery. He and I got along really well and we enjoyed similar beer styles, so when he asked me to join him I jumped at the opportunity. I’ve been brewing about 20 years now and have mastered everything from ale to sake.
Like many people, I was a beer drinker long before I enjoyed the taste. Now I consider myself something of a connoisseur. Of all the beers we make, I enjoy Firebreak Red the best. I like the maltiness and roasted barley flavors it has. Over the years I’ve discovered that I’m more of a maltster than a hophead. I enjoy a Firebreak Red with pizza on Sunday night, usually a Chicago-style with pepperoni on it, at the very least.
My wife and I have 2 dogs that we walk daily and spoil rotten. They like to sing and talk to us in their own doggy language. Besides dogs and beer, my other passion is music. I’m primarily a bassist and I have a home studio with lots of fun toys. One of these days, don’t be surprised see me in a jam session at the brewery.
A little about me: I was born in Dixon, live in Sacramento and went to college in Chico, where I discovered my love of beer. Go figure. “He went to Chico and became a beer-drinker?” Who would have ever guessed that?
I’m 28 and married to my wonderful wife Claire. We have a newborn daughter named Olive, and when you add in our dog Belle (another female) I’m completely outnumbered, gender-wise.
Being new to the parenting game, you can imagine that my wife and I have our hands pretty darned full right about now. Feedings ‘round the clock and changing diapers has become our new “normal.” Never before in my life have I actually fantasized about getting a full night’s sleep. I might grumble from time to time, but in reality I’m enjoying every minute of being a dad.
Outside of taking care of the baby, you’re most likely to find my nose buried in a book. If I’m not reading and trying to expand my brewing knowledge, I like to enjoy good beer and good food at local eateries. In my mind, nothing beats pleasant company combined with tasty brews and local cuisine.
As far as my brewing background goes, I’ve been experimenting at home for 5+ years, and completed a full-time internship at brewery in Concord, California. I joined ARBC two years ago and feel like I’ve found a home here. I’d be crazy to pass up the opportunity to work with and learn from both Andy and David, who have a combined 40 years of brewing experience.
My favorite ARBC brew? No matter the weather, I’m always in the mood for an AU Golden Ale. Believe it or not, I’m actually drinking one as I write this.
This brewery has some of the best-tasting, most drinkable beers I’ve ever tried, so when I learned there was an opening at here at ARBC, I applied immediately. My goal is to learn more about the craft of brewing and one day join the team making beer with David, Andy and Kyle.
Fire Break Red Ale is my favorite. It has a rich, roasted flavor and a fantastic creamy texture. It’s an amazingly smooth and balanced beer. If you haven’t already, you should definitely try it.
Beer brings back fond memories for me. I remember that on hot summer days, my dad would sometimes let me have a little sip of his. Unlike most kids, I loved the taste right off the bat. It would be many years before I’d have my first full glass of beer, but it was well worth the wait.
You could say that I’m kind of a “foodie,” and I have a great appetite. My favorite thing to eat is a nice, medium-rare cut of prime rib with garlic mashed potatoes and asparagus. And if you’re ever dishing up blackened catfish, invite me over!
In the winter I love to go snowboarding and I head off to the slopes as often as I can. When the weather is warmer my girlfriend Kayla and I enjoy playing disc golf with friends. Pretty much any outdoor activity is just fine with me.
I also love movies. The best one I’ve ever seen is “The Darjeeling Limited.” It’s about three brothers who go on a spiritual journey to find themselves and reconnect with their mother. It’s a great story. The main characters remind me a lot of my own brothers and our shared sense of humor.
I joined ARBC because I’ve always wanted to be a part of a company with vision. That’s really important to me. The fact that they also have a fantastic product doesn’t hurt either! Seriously, what’s not to like? The atmosphere is relaxed, I have cool co-workers and fun customers. Did I mention that the beer is great, too?
If you asked me which ARBC beer is my favorite, I’d have a tough time choosing. I love them all depending on the weather, but if I’m indecisive, I always go RED. I’ve been a beer drinker since I could open a bottle…which wasn’t all that long ago, now that I think about it.
When it comes to food, I’m not very picky. Pretty much anything that’s home-made or free is all right with me! My favorite thing to eat is nice grass-fed, medium-rare burger with steak sauce and sautéed onions. On the weekends my boyfriend does most of the cooking for us. Summer afternoons hanging out on the riverbank, barbecuing and drinking beer sound perfect.
I have a furry, four-legged child named Zeus. He’s a bundle of energy like me, so we’re a terrific match. Of course, he’s a beer-lover too, though I limit his consumption to an occasional swig from his bowl. We enjoy river days, tearing apart tennis balls and snuggling.
While I love watching movies in general, I guess you’d say that I’m a huge with Jim Carrey fan. Anything with him in it cracks me up! I like just about all of his movies, but if I had to pick only one, Dumb & Dumber would be my absolute favorite.
Right now I don’t have any professional brewing experience, but I definitely have an interest. I’ve messed around with a few homebrews batches and I’m looking forward to learning more.
